I know very little about copyright law but it would seem to me that to be a copyright attorney these days is a lot harder work than it used to be. Because of the Internet there are so many gray areas of publication and broadcasting and people who do copyright infringement and put it out there on the Internet as music or imagery or writing, they are Quick to find as many gray areas and loopholes and exceptions to fair use and all of that so that they can just blast forward taking whatever content they want and reusing it. I think of that the copyright laws need a complete overhaul especially in regards to intellectual properties. The problem is if you tell people that they can take up to five seconds sample of someone else’s music and use it for your own creative and commercial contact then there is no fee paid or permission needed from the original author. So with that in mind, a person producing hip-hop or rap video remixes, also known as mash ups, Can simply go to the Internet and it’s like having a free shopping spree going around to whatever site they want grubbing choosing copying, sampling, looping whatever they want to do within the law so then they come out with a hip hip-hop recording and the original artist which you may number in the dozens, don’t get a dime. FaIr use? That’s complete nonsense, it’s thriving. Ironically one music group I actually like hearing is known as “the Thievery Corporation”. Ironically ironic, isn’t it?!

How strange that there’s not even 1000 views of this video since the Internet, social media and in particular UA-cam have many hundreds of thousands of people infringing on copyrights, trademarks stock photos stock footage etc. UA-cam in particular is like a thieves den for abuse of fair use, and public usage versus Privately held copyrights, trademarks and other registries. I haven’t copyrighted or trademarked much of my own writing yet, nor registered any of my creative endeavors, but I cringe every time I see blatant theft of copy, writing, artistic and intellectual properties on the Internet. People are so brazen now, they think nothing of shoplifting images, music,, spoken Word recordings, stock footage that they assume, wrongly, are in the public domain. I’ve talked with a lot of social media and UA-cam content makers and they really lowered their standards over time and basically became shoplifters of images audio and motion picture footage with total disregard. It’s sad. Especially they know they’re doing something wrong but they are just based on their sense of entitlement to use other peoples properties, basically shoplifting other peoples intellectual and creative materials and assuming them as their own. They know they won’t get sued, they might get a cease and desist notice which they can immediately put the brakes on their use of someone’s material but then they just slowly creep back into the scene and bringing along with them that same stolen material. It’s a very challenging time for people who hold copyrights, trademarks and other registrations that had been respected for so many decades and now are lost to the attractive yet ugly Internet. This panel discussion is valuable to watch but only scratches the service of a very itchy topic. these days I see very little dialogue or discussion about fair use by those who are abusing it. When I ask people about use of imagery they just kind of laugh and say “dude, it’s for entertainment only. It’s for education only. What I’m doing with other peoples material is it done as it And homage to them, they should actually be thanking me for promoting their work, I’m doing it as entertainment, it’s a parody, it’s satire, it’s just done for comedy, I’m not doing it for commercial reasons. Etc.“ In fact, whether intentional or not, people are financially profiting from material that isn’t theirs. yes this is being said by people who are making $5000 to $25,000 per month from advertising revenue from their videos that contain stolen material. When asked about this, those content makers will just say things like “hey, it’s not my fault my video went viral and is very popular. That attracted the advertisers and they send me money for all the clicks and views I’m getting. It’s out of my control, I never meant to make money off of it but it’s nice cash flow. Basically I made a collage or montage with other peoples images & music, so I guess it became my own., cool!” Actually not cool. Basically what that person is doing, is that they are getting all the benefits of having copyrighted work without actually having copyrighted it themselves. At one point there are a whole new crop of content providers that just search around UA-cam and shoplift from other peoples videos making them their own as a sort of the arrangement and that goes full circle if they stay they are “just doing a satire, this just provided for comedy and entertainment, blah blah blah” I think it’s deplorable, just sickening. People won’t take responsibility and own up to the fact that they are not really that creative themselves, they are just stealing other peoples creativity… comments?

I find this style of music is like coffee. Starbucks exists because you have to have consistency. You want to know what you can expect, and what you're gonna get. 70s reggae: whatever it is, the record's gonna be good. Juan understands this but not everyone making some music to an electro beat and calling it techno does. This means there's a big inconsistency in quality within the genre. Bigger than in most genres. This is a cause for the genre as a whole not being taken up. There was a nepotism as its core which corrupted the music.
